Obviously the history of the building called zum LÖWENZORN is one of the most exciting in the old part of the city of Basel.

Over 10 years ago, the LÖWENZORN received a ICOMOS Suisse price.

The history of this establishment, situated in the heart of the old part of Basel in Gemsberg, is as mysterious as the origin of its name.

Since it was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century, its premises, rich in tradition, have become established as a lively centre for active folk culture in Basel.

Student fraternities, carnival cliques and other traditional clubs meet here the whole year round for their exercises and social conventions.

The LÖWENZORN is the home of three traditional guilds of Basel:

The menu in the homely restaurant includes not only regional specialities but also culinary traditions from all over Switzerland.

How to find us

The LÖWENZORN lies in the heart of the historical old part of Basel, an area closed to traffic. The best place to park your car is in the Storchen car park, entrance in Spiegelgasse/Fischmarkt, from where it is only a few steps through Stadthausgasse and Schneidergasse to Spalenberg.

Just as short is the walk from the tram stop at Marktplatz, from where you reach us via Hutgasse and Spalenberg. The No. 3 tram and No. 34 bus, however, also take you to the University stop, from where you only have to «negotiate» the Spalenberg downhill.
